Creativity Coaching will Guide You from
Where You Are to Where You Want to Be

CoachingAs your coach, I will help you:

  • Identify your focus and goals

  • Establish sustainable habits and practices

  • Take effective action

  • Eliminate obstacles

  • Be accountable to yourself

Working with a coach will give you awareness of your creative purpose. It gives you the structure and support of a regular check-in with someone who focuses on your agenda and aspirations.

Coaching

As your coach, I will:

  • Meet you where you are and encourage you to move to where you want to be

  • Ask questions to prompt you to explore possibilities

  • Listen with discernment, never judgment

  • Reframe your perceptions when you’re in the grip of harsh self-judgment

  • Encourage you to identify action steps

  • Help you identify resistance and brainstorm solutions

  • Witness your progress and encourage you to celebrate your success

A typical coaching session is a half hour telephone conversation where we:

  • Review what action you’ve taken and what you’re doing in the basic practices that support a creative life

  • Congratulate your successes and explore what you will do to keep yourself motivated

  • Talk about what’s getting in your way and what you can do to solve problems, remove obstacles and persevere through resistance

  • End the call by drafting an inquiry, an open-ended question for you to ponder throughout the week (it’s like having your own, personalized Zen koan)

I follow up by sending a personalized postcard to you each week. You can follow up with email or voice mail messages to highlight your progress throughout the week, if you wish.

If you know you want to get started, please contact me to schedule a Discovery Session, a two hour face-to-face meeting where we can clarify your values and goals, explore principles and concepts we’ll use in coaching, identify which suggested practices you’ll commit to and tailor the coaching relationship to fit you. If you don’t live in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area and cannot conveniently travel here, we can do the Discovery Interview on the phone. I’d be delighted to be your guide!

What is coaching? And what isn’t coaching?

Coaching Is... Coaching is NOT...
A one-to-one relationship of peers A one-up, one-down relationship
Based on the assumption that the client is skilled, mentally healthy, creative and responsible Based on the assumption that the client needs fixing, is incomplete, or is lacking essential qualities
Serving as witness and advocate Serving as expert or judge
Supportive, insightful, and challenging Directive, advice-giving, demanding or caretaking
Focused on action in the present to achieve a goal in the future Rehashing or healing the past; coaching is not therapy

How does coaching work?

Usually, the client and coach talk on the phone for a half hour once a week on a scheduled day and time. The client sets the agenda. Clients often talk about what they did to complete their commitments, what obstacles may have come up, and what they noticed about their process during the week. The coach listens empathetically and asks questions that invite the client to explore new possibilities and perspectives. Coaching calls follow the natural flow of the client’s discovery.

How is creativity coaching different from personal coaching or life coaching?

Creativity coaching is a type of personal coaching where the creative process is the primary interest and focus.

Most of my clients focus on some aspect of their creativity in our coaching sessions. Some earn their income with their creativity. Some want to make their creativity a larger part of how they earn their living. Some want to use creative and innovative thinking to expand their business, career or professional standing. Some want to make their entire lives a creative experience.

What I know about creativity helps my clients identify what stage of the creative process they’re dealing with, what’s a normal part of the creative process, what common problems might arise, what solutions might be effective. What I’ve researched about neurology helps my clients understand what’s going on in their brains when they create and when they resist creating, and how to effectively keep their executive/creative brain in charge.

My clients’ experience with their creativity helps me constantly expand my knowledge. I always keep an open mind. Every client’s journey through the creative process is unique.

When is Rosanne available for coaching?

I offer coaching on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and afternoons. To inquire about current openings, click here.

What does coaching cost?

Many coaches charge a flat monthly fee. I prefer to invoice and charge clients only for the sessions we actually have. My hourly rate is $95, so the average monthly cost for four half-hour sessions is $190. Billing is done one month in advance. Invoices include a list of the scheduled calls, and clients can adjust the invoice to exclude a week if they will be on vacation or out of town. Invoices are mailed on the 20th of each month. Payment is due on the 1st of the month.

What is Rosanne’s coaching experience?

I started coaching many years ago as an offshoot of my teaching. When students asked to continue working with me one-on-one outside of class, I started coaching them, even though the term ‘personal coach’ hadn’t yet been coined.

I made my coaching services a primary focus in my business in 1998. At last count, I’ve coached over 115 clients, some for a few months, some for a year or more, a handful for more than 5 years.

  • I’ve worked with a personal coach of my own since 1997.
  • My coaching naturally draws on the research and experience I gained in writing Dancing in the Dragon's Den and Write Anyway: How to Keep Showing Up for Your Writing No Matter What! My insights about the creative process are tailored to fit each client's personality, values and situation.
  • My experience as a teacher and freelance writer, as well as my experience running my own creativity-based business, adds depth to my coaching.
  • I am committed to lifelong learning. I continue to research different coaching approaches and related topics.

How do we get started?

Once you’ve decided you want to work with me as your Creativity Coach, contact me to schedule a Discovery Interview, a two hour face-to-face meeting where we can clarify your values and goals, explore principles and concepts we’ll use in coaching, identify which suggested practices you’ll commit to and tailor the coaching relationship to fit you. If you don’t live in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area and cannot conveniently travel here, we can do the Discovery Interview on the phone.

If you still have questions, contact me.
