What is Coaching?
| Coaching Is… |
Coaching is NOT…
|
| A one-to-one relationship of
peers |
A one-up, one-down
relationship |
| Based on the assumption that
the client is skilled, mentally healthy, creative and
responsible |
Based on the assumption that
client needs fixing, is incomplete, or is lacking essential
qualities |
| Serving as witness and
advocate |
Serving as expert or judge
|
| Supportive, insightful, and

FAQs
How does coaching work?
Usually, the client and coach talk
for a half hour once a week on a scheduled day and time. Clients
often talk about what they did to complete their commitments, what
obstacles may have come up, and what they noticed about their
process during the week. The coach listens empathetically and asks
questions that invite the client to explore new possibilities and
perspectives. Coaching calls follow the natural flow of the client’s
discovery.
How is creativity coaching different from
personal coaching?
Creativity coaching is a type of
personal coaching where the creative process is the primary interest
and focus.
Most of my clients focus on some
aspect of their creativity in our coaching sessions. Some earn their
income with their creativity. Some want to make their creativity a
larger part of how they earn their living. Some want to use creative
and innovative thinking to expand their business, career or
professional standing. Some want to make their entire lives a
creative experience.
What I know about creativity helps my
clients identify what stage of the creative process they’re dealing
with, what’s a normal part of the creative process, what common
problems might arise, what solutions might be effective. My clients’
experience with their creativity helps me constantly expand my
knowledge. I always keep an open mind. Every client’s journey
through the creative process is unique.

How much does coaching cost?
Many coaches charge a flat monthly
fee (anywhere from $200 to $500 or more), with the understanding
that cancelled calls (because the coach or client is out of town or
not available) will be balanced by the months when there are five
weeks instead of the usual four.
I prefer to invoice and charge
clients only for the sessions we actually have. My hourly rate is
$95, so the average monthly cost is $190. Billing is done one month
in advance. Invoices include a list of the scheduled calls and
clients can adjust the invoice to exclude a week if they will be on
vacation or out of town. Invoices are mailed on the 20th of each
month. Payment is due on the 1st of the month.
What is Rosanne’s coaching experience?
I started coaching many years ago as
an offshoot of my teaching. When students asked to continue working
with me one-to-one outside of class, I started coaching them, even
though the term ‘personal coach’ hadn’t been coined yet.
-
I made my coaching services a
primary focus in my business since 1998.
-
I’ve worked with a personal coach
of my own since 1997.
-
I’m a founding member of the Twin
Cities Coach’s Collaborative.
-
My coaching naturally draws on the
research and experience I gained in writing Dancing in the
Dragon's Den. My insights about the creative process are
tailored to fit each client's personality, values and situation.
-
My experience as a teacher and
freelance writer, as well as my experience running my own
creativity-based business adds depth to my coaching. I’ve gained a
wide perspective working in a variety of roles in a variety of
businesses over the years, including manager, editor, research
assistant, instructional designer, and even programmer/analyst
once upon a time.
-
I am committed to life-long
learning. I bring the insight gained from diverse personal growth
workshops and experiences to my coaching. I continue to research
different coaching approaches and related topics through
independent reading and attending conferences as both presenter
and participant.
